The Americans with Disabilities Act established a set of guidelines that are meant to provide equal access to public buildings and structures for all people, regardless of disability. Existing public buildings are given time to become ADA compliant, while new construction, such as restaurants, offices and other public spaces must be built in accordance to the ADA rules and recommendations.

A wheel chair ramp is an obvious example of ADA compliant design, but ADA compliance goes beyond structural considerations. For example, wall lighting and fixtures in public buildings must also meet ADA guidelines. ADA lighting is designed to give a standard level of illumination at a given distance. Some places in public buildings where ADA lighting is required are elevator cars, stairways and entrances. ADA lighting is also preferred in areas that have posted signage.

The ADA recognizes safety and access as major concerns in public bathrooms. An ADA compliant restroom is equipped with hand rails and grab bars, and the floor layout of the room accommodates people using wheelchairs or other mobility assistants. The sink is situated for convenient access, and the bath faucets are designed for easy use.
